Task and Concept

The Museum zu Allerheiligen, situated in the picturesque Old Town of Schaffhausen, brings together archaeology, history and art as well as natural history under one roof. With its extensive permanent exhibitions and annualy up to nine alternating exhibitions, it highlights a great variety of themes in an attractive and comprehensible way. Interdisciplinary special exhibitions stimulate the discussion on current cultural and scientific issues. A large part of the museum is housed in the premises of the former All Saints Benedictine monastery. Like the previous monastery located here, the museum is a place for knowledge, culture and encounters. With the name Museum zu Allerheiligen (“The All Saints Museum”) reference is made to the universality of the mediaeval monastery and expression is given to the variety of branches of learning represented here. The place and the architecture, which impart 1000 years of construction history, form an integral part of the museum. The imposing minster, the idyllic herb garden and the biggest cloister in Switzerland open to the public also belong to the whole area. A visit to the museum, therefore, always takes place in a very special atmosphere.

The town of Schaffhausen is the responsible body for the Museum zu Allerheiligen. The Canton Schaffhausen, as well as foundations, societies and sponsors make additional financial contributions.
