Collections

The collections form an important field of work of the Museum zu Allerheiligen. They house important archaeological, cultural and natural history objects, a collection of art and graphics, as well as the Ebnöther collection of antiquities of international renown.

In addition to collecting and preserving culturally and historically significant objects and presenting them to the public, the core tasks of the museum also include cultural-historical and scientific research on the holdings.

The Museum zu Allerheiligen continuously studies its collections and makes the resulting findings accessible to the public through exhibitions and publications. Furthermore, staff members participate in current discussions in their disciplines with publications and lectures. Research projects often take place in cooperation with universities and research institutes or in collaboration with museum associations.

Conservation and restoration work preserves the objects for future generations and allows the sometimes very fragile exhibits to be accessible to the public, for example, by presenting them in exhibitions.

With the support of the Federal Office of Culture, the Museum zu Allerheiligen conducted systematic research on the provenance of selected works from the art collection from 2019 – 2022. The aim was to examine the collection for any works of art confiscated by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945, as well as to scientifically reappraise contexts of origin and acquisition in general. In the future, our institution will continue to promote sustainable and transparent provenance research.

During the course of the project, it was possible to examine a large part of the museum’s older art collection, a total of around 600 works, with regard to persecution-related confiscation contexts and to locate them in a four-level categorization system prescribed by the Federal Office of Culture.
